Features: Is Ollie Man’s Best Friend?

There are several differences between Ollie and some of its top competitors. Here’s what to keep in mind if you’re considering using their services…

1. Ingredients Worth Wagging For

Ollie’s meals contain high-quality, human-grade ingredients that you could eat yourself. The ingredients are USDA-verified and there are no fillers, artificial flavorings, or preservatives. Each meal contains a combination of quality proteins, vegetables, and seeds, plus healthy fats and superfoods like kale and blueberries.

Heck, I was even tempted to order a meal for myself!

2. More Than Just The Dog’s Dinner

Ollie’s recipes are designed for any type of dog. Weight problems? No worries. Allergies, a sensitive stomach, or simply fussy? Easy-peasy! Ollie has the recipe you’ll need. They also have a selection of healthy dog treats for our good boys and girls. Choose from 3 recipes: the single-ingredient ‘Just Sweet Potato Slices’, chicken and apple, or beef and sweet potato jerky strips.

But that’s not all. Ollie offers a range of supplements to keep your pooches healthy. They’re all-natural and made in a cGMP-certified facility. These include Probiotic Chews for tummy problems, Zoomies for hip and joint problems, and Chill Pills when it’s time to relax.

3. Fur-lexible Plans

You can test out their meals without committing to a full plan. Ollie offers a cheaper half-plan option for newcomers. It’s a lifesaver for those of us with fussy furballs (I feel your pain), and a great way to see whether your dog enjoys the food before continuing.

4. Nutrition to Give Every Dog Its Day

Ollie’s meals are balanced and meet all of AAFCO’s nutritional levels for dogs. They cook their ingredients in small batches at low temperatures. This keeps more nutrients intact and kills any bacteria. No more high-risk raw food when it’s time to feed your pup.

Ollie even goes the extra mile and tests every single batch of food to make sure it’s 100% safe to eat before shipping it to you. Talk about commitment to quality!

Plans and Recipes: Bone Appetit?

Ollie offers 4 fresh recipes and 2 baked recipes with different main proteins. You can purchase fresh-only recipes or get a mixed bowl plan that combines fresh and baked recipes. Aside from the range of veggies, they also offer a great selection of proteins including chicken, turkey, beef, and lamb.

All recipes are created with health issues in mind. They’re nutritionally dense and all the ingredients are listed for you to see.

After you take a short quiz, Ollie will use a vet-formulated algorithm to calculate your pup’s ideal portion size. It’ll also automatically exclude any recipes that might affect their allergies or sensitivities.

You’ll need to check the detailed ingredient list if your pup has any serious allergies, but for a regular dog in generally good health, all 6 recipes should be safe.

I like how careful Ollie is when it comes to your pup’s allergies and sensitivities.Plans and Recipes: Bone Appetit?

Now, let’s take a closer look at Ollie’s recipes.

Fresh recipes: Tailored goodness straight to their bowl

You can choose from 4 different fresh recipes for your furry friend: Beef with Sweet Potatoes, Chicken with Carrots, Turkey with Blueberries, and Lamb with Cranberries.

Fresh recipes: Tailored goodness straight to their bowlIt’s really nice to be able to add variety in your dog’s diet

The beef recipe is a well-rounded meal for most dogs. It includes beef along with beef kidneys and livers. These are great for fueling an active dog or growing pup. You’ll also get potatoes, sweet potatoes, peas, and spinach, which provide a healthy dose of fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants.

For pups with sensitive tummies, you can’t go wrong with the chicken recipe. It comes with chicken and chicken livers for protein, then carrots, spinach, and cranberries for fiber and vitamins, and rice for a gentle source of carbs.

If your pup needs to lose some weight, then the turkey recipe is a great choice. It’s got turkey breast. kale, carrots, blueberries, and pumpkin. Everything your doggo needs to stay lean.

Finally, the lamb recipe works well for pups with allergies since it avoids common triggers. There’s lamb and lamb liver for protein, chickpeas, kale, cranberries, and green beans for fiber and vitamins. To round it off, butternut squash, potatoes, and rice add easily digestible carbs. It’s higher in calories, which is great for large or athletic dogs.

For an extra nutritional touch, all of these recipes include salmon oil and vitamins E, D3, B1, B2, and B6.

Dry recipes: Pup-approved, wholesome crunch from bag to bowl

Ollie also offers 2 dry food recipes, Beef and Sweet Potato and Chicken and Carrot.

Both are baked into bite-size morsels at safe, low temperatures to ensure minimal nutrient loss and a great crunch for your dog.

Dry recipes: Pup-approved, wholesome crunch from bag to bowlOllie lets you choose from 2 types of healthy dry food for dogs or even combine them in your order

Both recipes include animal protein and nutrient-packed veggies. For added fiber and vitamins, the meals include oats, sweet potatoes, chickpeas, pea flour, carrots, spinach, and apples.

The beef recipe has real beef and beef livers, plus healthy fats in the form of coconut oil and fish oil. The chicken recipe comes with chicken meat, livers, and whole dried eggs.  Then fish and sunflower oil for healthy fats. Like the fresh recipes, the baked ones are fortified with vitamins and minerals for a nutritionally complete meal.

Pricing: An Af-fur-dable Op-paw-tunity?

Ollie’s prices vary a lot based on your dog’s size and dietary needs. The bigger your pup, the more food you’ll need to order.

$0.90 per portion for half fresh plan (tiny pup) 2-week starter pack Free

The price per meal plan can change depending on the plan and recipes you choose. For example, a beef-only fresh plan is slightly cheaper than other recipes, while a lamb-only fresh plan is the most expensive option.

If you’re looking to save money you can opt for a mixed bowl plan over a fresh one. Alternatively, you can get a half-plan and combine Ollie with your dog’s current food.

To get an idea of what prices look like, I simulated 3 meal plans for different dog sizes. I chose the beef meals as they’re the most affordable.

  • Smaller Dogs

For smaller dogs, I went with an active 4-month-old, 3lbs Toy Poodle. The quiz results told me it needed 112 calories in a day. The total costs worked out to $12.60 a week for the half-fresh plan and $18 a week for the full plan.

  • Large Dogs

For very large dogs, I opted for a 4-year-old, 180lbs St. Bernard.  A 1-week starter pack of fresh food worked out to $125. For a 2-week half-fresh plan, the total came to $77 per week. Finally, for a 1-week mixed plan, it rounded off at $115.

  • Average Size Dogs

Finally, for an average-sized dog, I chose a one-year-old 40-lb Alaskan Klee Kai. With a diet of 675 calories a day, 14 packs would last 2 weeks and would cost $51 per week for a full-fresh plan, $35.7 per week for a half-fresh plan, and $42 per week for a mixed plan.

So on average, you’re looking at around $6-7 dollars a day for an average-sized dog, less for a small pup, and more for a large doggo.

It might seem steep, but how much would you pay for plain raw food or home-cooked meals? $5? $6? The difference is negligible.

What about the prep time and nutritional value? How long would it take to find and cook the right ingredients? Honestly, when you consider how much time you’d save, Ollie’s services sound like great value for money.

Average Size DogsFor really small puppies, the mixed bowl plan is not available, only the full and half fresh plans

A great thing about Ollie is that shipping is always free, so you’re only paying for your food. Ollie also offers a massive 60% off your first box plus a free bowl.

If you’re looking for extra dog treats, they work out to $9 for the sweet potato slices and $10 for the jerky strip treats. For supplements, it costs $22 per jar of 60 chews.

Ollie offers a 100% money-back guarantee on your starter box if your pup doesn’t seem to like the food. Just make sure you’ve closely followed the transitioning instructions to rule out any problems.

That being said, there’s no return or exchange policy beyond the starter box. If you continue your subscription after this initial delivery, you can’t send it back, so make sure you cancel your subscription if you don’t want to continue receiving Ollie boxes.

How it Works

Ordering from Ollie is super easy, and, most importantly, quick.

You simply need to take a quiz about your dog, select the recipes you want in case there’s more than 1, then proceed to checkout.

After that, you can add additional dogs as well if you’re a lucky owner of more than 1 pup.

How to Sign Up

  1. Go to Ollie’s website
  2. Take the 8-step quiz. You’ll need to enter your name and email, the name of your pup, its birthday, breed, current weight, ideal weight (optional), spay/neuter status, activity levels (mellow, active, or very active), stool status, and add any food sensitivities or allergies from the list.
  3. Read the quiz results to see how many calories your dog needs to eat in a day.
  4. Choose the type of plan you want for your dog from the ones available: full fresh, half fresh, or mixed bowl.

Managing Your Subscription

It’s super easy. You can pause, skip, cancel your plans, or change delivery dates as long as you do it before your cutoff date. After you sign up for your starter box, you can adjust the delivery frequency for future orders as well.

If you need to make changes to your order, you can do it on your account page in a matter of minutes. Just make sure you do it at least 4 days before your next order is shipped.

If you’re heading out, you can choose to skip a delivery or reschedule up to 6 weeks at a time. You can also make Ollie travel with you by changing your delivery address on your account.

Cancelling your subscription is just as easy. You can do it from your Ollie account by selecting Cancel subscription at the bottom of the Pup’s Info page. Bear in mind that if you have more than 1 dog, you need to do this for each subscription individually. And remember to do it at least 36 hours before your next scheduled delivery to ensure that you won’t receive (and pay for it) as well.

Support

You can contact Ollie’s customer service team by phone, SMS, online chat, or email. They’re available during the weekdays from 9 am to 7 pm ET and on the weekends from 10 am to 7 pm.

The team known as Canine Care is super helpful. They will try their best to fix any problems. This includes making up for food that melted on its way to your house.

For most issues, the Canine Support Center on the website provides detailed answers to all your questions. The well-organized articles cover important topics ranging from food to delivery, making it easy to navigate and find the information you need.

Bottom Line: Is Ollie Worth Every Bite?

I love that there are no preservatives, fillers, artificial flavoring, or coloring… And the variety of macro-balanced meals is a huge plus. Honestly, your dog will probably eat better than you do.

The only downside is the cost, but considering all the good things (and tons of enthusiastic testimonials) about Ollie, all I can say is that it’s worth it.
